FIFA Moves to Ban Third-Party Ownership of Footballers

World football governing body FIFA has taken the decision of general principle that third-party ownership of players’ economic rights (TPO) shall be banned with a transitional period.
The decision comes at the end of a two-day meeting of the FIFA executive committee and has been handed back to the TPO for the relevant technical regulations to be drafted.
The draft will be submitted to the Players’ Status Committee and then to the Executive Committee for approval ahead of a full implementation of the ban three or four years from now.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter stated “We took a firm decision that TPO should be banned but it cannot be banned immediately. There will be a transitional period.”
UEFA President Michel Platini meanwhile said “[Third-party ownership of players] threatens the integrity of our competitions, damages football’s image, poses a long-term threat to clubs’ finances and even raises questions about human dignity.”
Platini added “I am very happy for football and I am very happy for players that FIFA has followed UEFA’s initiative and recommendation to outlaw the practice of third-party ownership. I have been constantly warning for years that this practice is a danger to our sport,”
Some of the most famous footballers to have been under third-party ownership include Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao as well as Brazilian international Hulk who plays for Russian Premier League side Zenit St. Petersburg.
