Jega Will Not Resign Until His Tenure Expires – INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said its chairman, Attahiru Jega, is not proceeding on terminal leave three months to the expiration of his tenure, as speculated. INEC spokesman, Kayode Idowu, made the clarification on a television programme monitored by newsbreak.ng.
Kayode explained that Jega’s appointment is not based on civil service rules. There are speculations that Jega might be compelled to embark on leave before the poll. The news is hinged on the perception that the federal government has become distrustful of the INEC chairman since the announcement of the poll shift. Jega, a professor of Political Science, on Saturday, based the postponement on security concerns from the National Security Adviser and various security agencies, against the initial dates for the elections. He shifted the election by six-weeks, being the period the military said it would require to tackle Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast. Jega’s tenure will wind down in June.
