Barely few weeks after the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel
Uduaghan urged traditional Rulers in the State to be vigilant over activities
of Fulani herdsmen in the state, a major incident which could have degenerated
into casualties on both sides occurred recently at Okpara Inland in Ethiope
East Local Government Area, when some heavily armed Fulani herdsmen clashed
with men of the Isiokolo Police Division and members of the Okpara Vigilante,
led by Mr Voke Ubuara.
According to an eye witness report , the gun duel which
continued unabated for some minutes left some cows dead, two AK-47 Riffles
recovered, just as the rampaging herdsmen flee and are still at large till this
moment. Our investigation revealed that some boys from the community had gone
into the bush to kill rabbit and in the process, when they were digging the
hole of the rabbit, close to the Fulani herdsmen's settlement, they allegedly
saw some Guns and Bullets which made one of them to rush into town to inform
members of the Okpara Vigilante.
We learnt that before storming the scene with his men, the
Okpara vigilante Chairmen, Mr Voke Ubuara had called the DPO at Isiokolo to
intimate him of the incident.
On getting to the scene, the herdsmen who were said to be
heavily armed with sophisticated guns were said to have opened fire on the
Police and Vigilante teams led by the DPO Supol Iwok Ndifreke Ntafiong.
In the gun duel that ensued, some Cows were said to have been
gunned down while the superior firing of the combined team of Police and
Vigilante overpowered the herdsmen and fled the scene. According to our source,
two AK-47 Riffles were recovered from the gunmen.
When contacted in a brief interview, the Okpara Vigilante
Chairman, Mr Voke Ubuara confirmed the incident and said the Police is already
on top of the matter. As at the time of filing in this report, all efforts to
get the Isiokolo Police Divisional Police Officer (DPO) on phone proved
abortive.
