INTERNATIONAL
military action against Boko Haram to free the abducted Chibok girls moved a
step closer following the arrival of the commander of the United States Africa
Command (Africom) and Afghanistan veteran General David Rodriguez in Nigeria.
Formerly a commanding general of the
US Army Forces Command, General Rodriguez is one of the most experienced and
decorated military commanders in the world. He has arrived in Nigeria ahead of the
planned deployment of drones and accurate tracking gears by the US military
against Boko Haram.
Already, there are US military
experts on the ground in Nigeria and they have briefed General Rodriguez on
their findings so far. These experts have already ascertained that most of the
raw materials used to make the two bombs that killed about 100 people in two
bomb blasts in the Federal Capital Territory at Nyanya on April 14 and May 1,
2014, were manufactured by an Ogun State company called Intrachem.
Located at Obadaoko Street on
Kilometre 13 along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, on Ewekoro, in Ogun State,
Intrachem is an explosives manufacturer. Having examined the remains of the
Honda Civic car used in the Nyanya attack, the US ballistics experts have
recovered canisters of explosives made by Intrachem.
Security sources say General Rodriguez’s arrival in Nigeria signals the end of the terrorist activities of Boko Haram. Since the arrival of the US team, they recovered LPG and acetylene cylinders, substantial quantities of ammonium nitrate, timing devices, small dry cell batteries and a 12 volt automobile battery used by Boko Haram.

General Rodriguez, a widely
decorated combatant who has served in Afghanistan among other places, has vast
experience at combating insurgencies. Among other things, he has served as the
commander of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, the
commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, the commander of the US First Armoured
Division, and deputy commander of US Forces in Afghanistan.
